At St John the Baptist, we believe students should have meaningful opportunities to contribute to the life of their school.
Student voice is about more than holding a leadership position or wearing a badge. It is about giving students opportunities to share their ideas, represent others, take responsibility, serve their community and contribute positively to school life.
Student Leadership at SJB
Formal student leadership opportunities at St John the Baptist include:
- School Captains
- House Captains
- Creative Arts Leaders
- St Vincent de Paul Leaders
- Student Representative Council (SRC) Representatives
These roles provide different opportunities for students to develop their strengths and contribute to our community.
Our School Captains represent the student body and take an active role in the life of the school, including leading assemblies, welcoming visitors, representing SJB at significant occasions and working with other student leaders.
Our House Captains build house spirit and encourage participation, teamwork and belonging through sporting, school and house activities.
Our Creative Arts Leaders promote and celebrate the Creative Arts within our school and support opportunities for students to participate, perform and share their talents.
Our St Vincent de Paul Leaders provide an important connection between student leadership, our Catholic faith and service to others. They help promote opportunities for our community to respond with compassion and put our faith into action.
Student Representative Council
Our Student Representative Council (SRC) provides an important avenue for student voice across the school.
SRC representatives listen to the ideas and feedback of their classmates, bring these perspectives to meetings and communicate information and outcomes back to their classes. They work closely with our School Captains and staff to discuss matters that are important to students and identify ways they can contribute to positive change at SJB.
Through the SRC, students may:
- gather ideas and feedback from their peers
- raise matters that are important to students
- discuss possible solutions to school-based issues
- contribute feedback about changes and new initiatives
- help plan activities and initiatives
- communicate decisions and actions back to their classmates.
This creates an ongoing cycle of listening, discussing, acting and reflecting, helping students understand that their voice can make a genuine contribution to their school.
Leadership Through Service
Leadership at St John the Baptist is grounded in our Catholic faith and Dominican tradition.
We encourage students to understand that leadership is not simply about a title or position. It is about service, responsibility, listening to others and using your gifts to make a positive difference.
Guided by our Dominican pillars of Prayer, Study, Community and Service, our student leaders are encouraged to lead with compass
