Discover St John the Baptist

Choosing a school is an important decision for every family. At St John the Baptist Primary School, we want families to have the opportunity to get to know who we are, what we value and what learning and belonging at SJB looks like.

Located in the heart of Maitland, St John the Baptist is a Catholic primary school for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. With a history dating back to 1856, our school combines a proud tradition of Catholic education with a contemporary approach to learning, wellbeing and student development.

A Catholic Community

Our Catholic faith is at the heart of who we are.

Inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus and our Dominican heritage, our community is guided by the pillars of Prayer, Study, Community and Service. These values are reflected not only in Religious Education, prayer and liturgy, but also in the relationships we build, the way we learn together and the way we care for and serve others.

We warmly welcome families from a variety of backgrounds who value the opportunities and community offered through Catholic education.

Learning at SJB

We hold high expectations for every student and are committed to providing learning that is engaging, purposeful and responsive to the needs of our learners.

Strong foundations in literacy and numeracy are central to our approach, alongside opportunities for students to think critically, be creative, collaborate, ask questions and embrace challenge.

We recognise that every child brings individual strengths, interests and needs to their learning. Our teachers work to provide the right balance of support, challenge and opportunity so that students can experience success and continue to grow.

Known, Valued and Connected

We believe children learn best when they feel safe, known, valued and connected.

Strong relationships are central to life at SJB. We seek to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where students develop a sense of belonging, build positive relationships and grow in confidence and independence.

Students are encouraged to have a voice in their school, take increasing responsibility for their learning and contribute positively to their community.

Partnership with Families

Families are an important part of the St John the Baptist community.

We recognise parents and carers as important partners in their child’s education and value open, respectful communication between home and school.

There are many ways for families to connect with and contribute to school life, and we value the different experiences, perspectives and strengths families bring to our community.

Come and Discover SJB

A website can provide information about a school, but the best way to understand a community is to experience it.

We welcome prospective families to learn more about St John the Baptist, explore our school and discover whether SJB is the right place for your child and family.

We look forward to welcoming you.
