Celebrating Our Catholic Identity

Catholic identity is at the heart of life at St John the Baptist. Our faith is not something reserved for particular occasions; it is woven through our learning, relationships, celebrations and everyday experiences as a school community.

As a Catholic school with a rich Dominican heritage, we are guided by the example of Jesus Christ and the Dominican pillars of Prayer, Study, Community and Service. These pillars continue to shape who we are and how we live, learn and serve together.

Faith in Our Everyday Life

Faith is very much a lived experience at SJB.

Throughout the year, our whole school community comes together for Masses and liturgies to celebrate significant moments in the Catholic calendar and the life of our school. Students also participate in year-level liturgies, class formation experiences, retreats and a variety of prayer experiences that provide opportunities to explore and express their faith in meaningful and age-appropriate ways.

Prayer is part of the everyday rhythm of life at SJB. Students pray together in their classrooms, share grace and take time for reflection and gratitude. We are also fortunate to have St Mary’s Chapel close by, providing a beautiful sacred space that our students and staff regularly visit for prayer, reflection, liturgy and formation.

These experiences are an important part of what makes our community special. Sometimes they are joyful celebrations filled with music and student participation; at other times they provide quiet opportunities for reflection, prayer and connection.

Parents, carers and families are always warmly welcomed to join us for our Masses, liturgies and other faith celebrations. Sharing these occasions together strengthens the connection between home, school and parish and reminds our students that they belong to a much wider community of faith.

Our Dominican Heritage

St John the Baptist has a proud Dominican tradition stretching back to the arrival of the Dominican Sisters in Maitland in 1867.

Their commitment to faith, education and service established a legacy that remains an important part of our school identity today.

Through Prayer, Study, Community and Service, our students are encouraged to seek truth, develop their gifts, build strong relationships and use what they have learned in service of others.

Parish and Sacramental Life

Our connection with our parish is an important part of our Catholic identity. Students and families have opportunities to participate in the prayer, liturgical and sacramental life of the Church, strengthening the relationship between school, family and parish.

We value the presence and involvement of our clergy within our school community and the opportunities this provides our students to experience faith as part of a living and connected Catholic community.

Faith in Action

Our Catholic faith calls us to look beyond ourselves and recognise our responsibility to others.

Throughout the year, students are provided with opportunities to put their faith into action through service, outreach, social justice initiatives and support for others within our local and wider communities.

These experiences encourage students to understand that service is about more than raising money or participating in an event. It is about recognising the dignity of others, responding with compassion and understanding that even small actions can make a positive difference.

Living Our Faith

At St John the Baptist, we want our Catholic identity to be something our students experience, not simply something they learn about.

Through prayer, learning, celebration, service and community, we encourage our students to grow in faith, ask questions, develop their gifts and recognise the contribution they can make to the world around them.

In doing so, we continue the Catholic and Dominican tradition that has shaped St John the Baptist for generations while creating a faith community that is welcoming, joyful and very much alive today.
