At St John the Baptist Primary School, we believe that every student is a unique learner with individual strengths, interests and needs. We are committed to providing an inclusive learning environment in which every student is known, valued and supported to participate, learn and experience success.
High-quality classroom teaching is the foundation of our approach. Teachers use curriculum expectations, assessment information, student learning data and their professional knowledge of each child to plan learning experiences that provide appropriate levels of support and challenge.
Responding to Individual Learning Needs
We recognise that students learn in different ways and at different rates. Some students may require additional support to access the curriculum or consolidate particular skills, while others may require extension and increased challenge.
Teachers work collaboratively with learning support staff, families and, where appropriate, external professionals to identify student strengths and needs and determine appropriate supports and adjustments.
Support may include:
- differentiated teaching and learning
- reasonable adjustments to support access and participation
- targeted individual or small-group instruction
- additional support in literacy or numeracy
- social and emotional support
- extension and enrichment opportunities
- individualised planning where appropriate
- collaboration with families and relevant professionals.
Support is responsive to the individual student and is informed by evidence, assessment and ongoing monitoring of progress.
Inclusive Education
St John the Baptist is committed to providing an inclusive learning environment consistent with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005.
We seek to ensure that students with disability can access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers. Reasonable adjustments are developed in consultation with students, families and relevant professionals, where appropriate, and are reviewed as students’ needs change.
Our approach to inclusion is also grounded in our Catholic identity and Dominican tradition. We recognise the dignity and value of every person and seek to create a community characterised by respect, belonging, compassion and high expectations.
Working in Partnership
Partnership with families is an important part of supporting student learning. Parents and carers bring valuable knowledge and understanding of their child, and we value open and respectful communication between home and school.
Where additional learning needs are identified, teachers and relevant staff work with families to develop a shared understanding of the student’s strengths, needs and appropriate next steps.
When required, the school may also collaborate with relevant Catholic Schools Maitland-Newcastle personnel and external professionals to support planning and decision-making.
Supporting Growth and Independence
Our goal is not simply to provide support, but to help students develop the skills, confidence and independence they need as learners.
We aim to recognise strengths, respond appropriately to need, provide challenge and opportunity, and support every student to make meaningful progress.
Through high expectations, inclusive practice and strong partnerships between students, families and staff, we seek to ensure that every learner at St John the Baptist has the opportunity to grow and thrive.
